The Venus flytrap is one of the best known and most spectacular carnivorous plants. Dionaea muscipula Kuga, has the familiar hinged structure with which it catches ants, beetles and spiders The fringes of the trap are lined with stiff, comb-like bristles that mesh together when the trap closes. The plant attracts its prey with sweet-smelling nectar. When an insect or arachnid touches a trigger hair on the inner leaf surface, the trap immediately snaps shut. The plant then digests its prey, after which the trap reopens and is ready for reuse.
