Maxillaria coccinea is a medium sized sympodial orchid. The new pseudobulbs form slightly higher than the previous ones, therefore this plant has a climbing growth habit. Each ovoid pseudobulb carries two sharp lanceolate, bright green leaves. This species flowers from spring to summer. The many, single flowered inflorescences arise from the base of the pseudobulb. The flowers reach a maximum size of around 2.5 centimeters and are bright red. The labellum is yellow with most variants, in some cases it is also known to be red. Propagation is done by division. Make sure that every division contains at least three pseudobulbs.
