Geogenanthus poeppigii originates from damp forests of Southern America. It grows there only at the forest floor. This species is closely related to the better-known genus and common houseplant Tradescantia. The plant consists of a stout stem with two or sometimes three terminal leaves. The leaves of this plant are almost round and have an unusually ribbed leaf structure. From the petiole and parallel with the central vein, darker stripes lead to the tip of the lighter colored leaf. The lower surface of the leaves are slightly hairy and purple. In some cases it is possible for this plant to produce flowers. Flowers have a purple to blue color and, similar to other species within this family, have three petals. Propagation is most easy by cuttings. Cut the main stem with one or two leaves and place this in water or soil to root.
