It’s not surprising that Utricularia quelchii ‘Auyan’ is often mistaken as an orchid. The flower is just as striking as that of the popular orchids and also has the spoon shaped leaves which remind us of an orchid. Utricularia quelchii ‘Auyan’ has a remarkable attribute which orchids don’t have though. It catches its prey with bladders which are found near or underneath the ground, hence the name ‘bladderwort’. This carnivore grows in the wild in trees on the table mountain Auyan-tepui.
